How Sapphire ADU Builders Was Born in Home Gardens

We started Sapphire ADU Builders in 2015, and it wasn’t because we saw a market opportunity. It was because we watched a homeowner in Home Gardens cry in her own driveway.

She had paid another company for an ADU permit package that never got submitted. Six months of payments, zero progress. When she called to ask what was happening, they stopped answering. She was a retired school employee, living on a fixed income, and the money she’d saved for years to build a rental unit for her disabled son was gone. We got brought in to sort out the mess. The plans were incomplete, the soil report had never been ordered, and the permit counter had no record of her project. We walked her through what had actually happened, what it would cost to fix, and how long it would really take. No sugarcoating.

That job changed how we saw this trade. Too many homeowners in Home Gardens were signing contracts without understanding what they were buying. No one was explaining setbacks, utility trenching, foundation requirements, or why one bid was forty percent cheaper than another. We promised ourselves we’d run a company that told the truth first and built second. That’s still how we operate every single day.

Our Founder’s Personal Connection to the ADU Trade

The first foundation we ever poured wasn’t for a client. It was for a shed in our own backyard in Home Gardens, back before anyone around here called these things ADUs. We didn’t know what we were doing. The concrete was mixed too wet, the forms bowed overnight, and the finished slab looked like a relief map of the San Jacinto foothills. But standing on that crooked slab the next morning, watching the sun come up over the Santa Ana River basin, something clicked. We had built something that would be there long after we were gone. It wasn’t straight, and it wasn’t pretty, but it was real.

We tore it out and did it again. Then again. Each time, the mix was smoother, the forms held true, and the finish was flatter. That’s how we learned this trade: by making mistakes, fixing them, and refusing to walk away from imperfect work. There was no trade school, no apprenticeship program, just the slow grind of doing it ourselves and caring enough to do it better on the next try.

For over a decade now, that’s the part of this work that still gets us out of bed at seven in the morning. Not the framing crews we coordinate, not the project timelines we manage, but the physical problem-solving. Reading a property’s topography and figuring out how to make a 400-square-foot structure feel like a home. Standing on a finished ADU floor at the end of a build and knowing that some family’s grandmother, or adult child, or tenant, will wake up here for the next thirty years. The smell of fresh lumber and wet concrete isn’t just a job site to us. It’s the smell of something permanent being made.

If we weren’t building ADUs, we’d probably still be doing this in some other form. Maybe restoring old bungalows in Redlands or rebuilding ranch fences in Mentone. The honest answer is we’d find a way to work with our hands and leave something useful behind. That’s what this trade gives us, and it’s what we try to give every homeowner who trusts us with their backyard.

Meet Our Team – The Person Behind Every Job

The founder and owner of Sapphire ADU Builders is the same person who was standing on that crooked shed slab in 2015, and the same person who sat in that Home Gardens driveway promising a retired school employee that someone would finally tell her the truth. We’ve kept the company deliberately focused rather than trying to become a large operation. Every project gets the owner’s direct attention from the first site visit to the final inspection.

Our background is in residential construction with more than ten years of lived experience in ADU-specific work: setbacks, lot coverage rules, utility connections, foundation engineering, sound attenuation, and all the unglamorous details that decide whether a project sails through plan check or stalls at the counter. What separates us from a corporate franchise technician is simple: we’ve poured the concrete, pulled the permits, argued with the utility companies, and fixed our own mistakes. There’s no script, no call center, and no handoff to someone who’s never walked your property.

Outside of work, we’re committed to the same patience and craftsmanship this trade demands. We believe in doing things once, doing them correctly, and standing behind what we build. That’s not a marketing slogan. It’s how we’ve run this company since the day we started.

Our Promise to Home Gardens Homeowners

We promise honest pricing, and we back that up with written line-item bids for every project. No vague allowances, no “we’ll figure it out later” budget gaps. You’ll see the foundation cost, the framing cost, the electrical cost, and every other line item before you sign anything.

We promise quality parts and materials, because we’ve walked job sites where cheap sheathing was already warping before the drywall went up. When a product brand matters long-term, we say so and we bid accordingly.

We promise to stand behind every job. If something we built fails because of our workmanship, we fix it. That’s not a warranty buried in fine print. It’s the same promise we made to ourselves on that first crooked slab: never walk away from imperfect work.

Our Credentials

State-licensed. Every professional working under our name is required to hold the license their state requires for residential construction work.
Insured & bonded. We carry the coverage a homeowner should expect before anyone starts digging in their backyard.
More than a decade of ADU experience. We’ve worked through Riverside County permit requirements, Home Gardens zoning considerations, and the specific soil and drainage challenges that come with building in this part of the Inland Empire.
Local reputation. We’ve built our name one project at a time, and we’re known in Home Gardens and the surrounding cities as a company that communicates clearly and does what we say we’ll do.

Here’s why those credentials matter: anyone can print “licensed and insured” on a website. A state-issued license means the person working on your property has met training requirements and is accountable to a licensing board. Insurance and bonding mean that if something goes wrong on your project, you’re not left holding the financial bag. And experience in this specific region means we already know what the plan checker in your city is going to flag before we submit. That saves you weeks and thousands of dollars in revision fees.

Rooted in Home Gardens

We’re based here because this is where the company started, and this is where we’ve stayed. We know the streets, the neighborhoods, the soil conditions, and the permit offices. When we drive through Home Gardens and pass an ADU we built, we remember the family who lives there, the challenges on that specific lot, and the day the final inspection passed. We’re not a national brand dropping into the area for a season. We’re your neighbors, and we’re building here because this is home.
